A curious reference to a possible attempt to take over a Greek island by Turkey in 2023 is included in the online version of the Economist magazine’s “case” under the title The World Ahead 2023.

British journalist and author Tom Stundage, deputy editor of the Economist and director of the annual publication The World Ahead, says in this year’s note accompanying the estimates, “on ten trends to keep in mind over the coming year”.

He talks about the war in Ukraine, the risk of recession internationally, climate change, China, the political situation and division in the US, new international alliances, the return of tourism after Covid and the next step of technology companies such as Apple and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta.

Notably, the deputy editor of the Economist (not coincidentally a position in the international publishing firm) categorizes a section under the heading “Flash points» which we should watch.

“Ultimate focus on war in Ukraine increases risk of conflict elsewhere” Standaz notes and adds: “With Russia’s attention elsewhere, conflicts are breaking out in its own backyard. China may decide there will never be a better time to make a move against Taiwan. India-China tensions could ignite in the Himalayas. And would it be possible for Turkey to try to occupy a Greek island in the Aegean? (pp. The columnist uses the verb to nab which in a more relaxed reading also means: grabs, steals)

In The World Ahead publication itself, it is noted that “Mr. Erdogan may also try to reverse his negative course through confrontation, either with Kurdish rebels in Syria, or with old enemy Greece over airspace and maritime rights. With the Greek elections also approaching, the risk of escalation is real.”

The Economist executive’s comment was immediately noticed in Turkey. As reported by SKY, CNN Turk anchor Gyokusu Ongoren Özgyur noted: “We know that there is tension between the two countries, as well as between the leaders of Greece and Turkey. But here there is a suggestion that Turkey might intervene. When I read this term for intervention, various scenarios come to mind, like Imia or something else.”

At the same time, Turkish media that support Erdogan expressed concern about Greece’s military exercises on the islands these days, a few days after the incendiary statements of Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, who provoked our country again last Friday, saying: “the minds of the Greeks should not be blown.”

It is recalled that on November 15, from the G20 meeting in Bali, Erdogan had again openly threatened Greece, saying that “we may come one night suddenly”. This phrase from Erdogan’s side had caused the unfavorable comments of the American newspaper Washington Post which asked what question, “with such allies, what to do with the enemies”since Turkey threatens Greece, a NATO ally.
