Kythira: Major Coast Guard operation to rescue 100 migrants

A major search and rescue operation of around 100 migrants, according to those on board, is underway from Coast Guard in the maritime area of Kythira near Diakofti port.

The operation is carried out under the coordination of the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard and is characterized as particularly difficult. Characteristically, they say that there is “a titanic struggle to save as many as possible”.

As it became known, the 100 migrants were on board a sailing boat. The vessel reported on Wednesday night that it was in distress after 20 minutes it hit rocks and broke up.

The migrants, according to the first information, are all at sea and the weather conditions in the area – which is steep – are particularly unfavorable, with winds of 7-8 Beaufort and gusts reaching 9-10 Beaufort.

A Coast Guard vessel, floating ships and a Navy helicopter are operating in the area.

Unconfirmed reports say there are dead.
