The Levantes of our National Junior Men’s polo team fought hard and in the semi-final of the European Championship against Spain, they showed passion and soul, they confirmed that they are rightfully in the elite of the sport in this age category, but they were defeated in the details by the “furious rocha” with 12-11 and will now fight for the bronze medal of the event.

Our national team will compete in the short final, the day after tomorrow Sunday (25/9) at 18:30 (Greece time) against Hungary with the aim of climbing to the European podium and giving Greek sports another medal. Hungary had earlier been beaten 18-17 by Serbia in the first semi-final, which was also a shocker and was decided on penalties.

Our internationals were evenly matched against the Spaniards for most of the match, with combativeness and good defense. But an inhibiting factor for the Greeks to have the upper hand, was the very mediocre percentage of the player above, just 5/13, as the Spaniards played a tough and effective defense, especially in the less and neutralized some of the attacking assets of his team Knife.

Despite this and despite the fact that Spain led by two goals, 8-6, 9-7 and 10-8 in the middle of the third eight minutes, our National Team fought back and equalized at 10-10 initially (with Gilla who was also our top scorer with 5 goals) and 11-11 afterwards (5.18 before the end with Puro). The Spaniards made it 12-11 in their favor through Gomila at 2.10 before the final and Greece had no answer, not even in the last attack with a man up.

Apostolis Georgaras of NOP made a great appearance scoring three times, both with impressive lobs. Also competing were natives Christos Bitsakos and Andreas Almyras, while also natives Andreas Bitsakos and Spyros Lykoudis were left out of the 13-team. We remind you that on the bench of our representative group, as a partner of Ilias Machira, is Makis Lykoudis, coach of NEP and former great ace of NOP.

Eight minutes: 3-3, 2-3, 5-5, 1-1.

HELLAS (Ilias Machiras): Karakouros, Bouzalas, Georgaras 3, Tottis, Almyras 1, Kastrinakis, Gillas 5, Spahits, Myrilos 1, Pouros 1, Bitsakos Chr., Kandanoleon, Iliopoulos.

SPAIN: Allegre, Bonnet, Gilles 1, Valls 2, Lopez 3, Ramon 1, Bargalio, Bruce, Perez R. 2, Romero 1, Gomila 1, Castro 1, Perez A.
