The 41-year-old Swiss announced his retirement from tennis yesterday after the Laver Cup, causing a huge impact worldwide. Anonymous fans and famous athletes from all disciplines sent their own messages through social media.
Among them is Novak Djokovic, one of the members of what is known as “The Big Three” (Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic), who waited 24 hours to do so, writing an emotional message on Instagram:
“Roger, it’s hard to look back on this day and put into words everything we’ve shared together in this sport. Over a decade of incredible moments and clashes to remember. Your career has set the example of what it means to achieve excellence and leadership with integrity and honesty,” Nole wrote and wished the Swiss the best:
“It is an honor to know you on and off the court, and for many years to come. I know this new chapter will have incredible things for you, Mirka, the kids, all your loved ones and Roger’s fans still have a lot to look forward to. From our family to yours, we wish you much joy, health and prosperity in the future. I look forward to celebrating your achievements and seeing you in London.”
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will meet again along with Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray in the European group at the Laver Cup on September 23 in London.
A day earlier, Rafa Nadal, the third member of the Big-3, had written about Roger Federer of 20 Grand Slams and 103 titles:
“Dear Roster, friend and rival, I wish this day had never come. It’s a sad day for me and for the whole sport. It has been a pleasure, but also an honor and a privilege to share with you all these years. Living incredible moments, on and off the field. We will have many more moments to share together in the future, we still have a lot to do, we both know. For now, I wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your children, your family. Enjoy what awaits you, see you in London,” wrote the Spaniard on social media.
Nadal and Federer first met in 2005 and since then there have been more than 10 years of epic clashes, nine of which have been in Grand Slam finals, six of which have been won by the Spaniard.
