The Mayor and the heads and representatives of the factions, at the end of the meeting, in their statements to the media, underlined their determination to give the bequest to the Municipality
Meeting with the leaders of the factions of the Municipal Council Chania had today, Thursday 15/9, the Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis, in his office at the City Hall, to inform them, regarding the issue that has arisen with the bequest at the location “Kako Kefali”, in Agios Onofrios.
The Mayor and the heads and representatives of the factions, at the end of the meeting, in their statements to the media, underlined their determination to give the bequest to the Municipality, in order to serve the urgent needs of the local community.
Mr. Simandirakis emphasized, among other things: “Today, I invited the leaders of the factions to the Chania City Hall, in order to inform them about a very serious matter, which has to do with the decisions of specific ministers of the local church, in relation to real estate, which they had agreed with decisions of collective bodies – both of the Parish Council of Kounoupidians, but also of the Metropolitan Council -, for a concession to the Municipality of Chania. Surprisingly, some time ago, after an investigation by the Municipality of Chania and specific initiatives we took, we found that not only will these properties not be granted to the Municipality, so that it can use them for schools and other social structures, but last May, an attempt was made selling them to a private person. With actions and meetings that took place with the Church, we stopped this process,” noted the Mayor of Chania and added: “we are determined to defend the public interest, which requires a school, KAPI, nurseries at the site and this we consider that and the church shares it and will do so in the end in this case”.
Mr. Simandirakis emphasized that the issue will also come to the Municipal Council of Chania, while he did not fail to thank the heads and representatives of the municipal factions “because we all made an important decision together, to move together, coordinated and coordinated, in order to achieve the goal , which is none other than the completion of the previous agreement. The Municipality of Chania is not at odds with the local church, which over time has proven its contribution to society as a whole. However, we are against specific decisions of specific ministers of our local church”.
For his part, the President of the Municipal Council of Chania, Eutychis Damianakis, noted, among other things, in his statements:
“The Municipality of Chania has a double legal interest, as it had already been granted (the properties) by unanimous Decisions of both Councils – Parish and Metropolitan. There are major decisions of the Plenary and the Council of State, mainly of the Supreme Court, according to which the Municipality, in order to serve its purposes, has a direct legal interest in matters of public utility use within the boundaries of the Municipality of Chania. The issue is legal, so the Municipality correctly and with the unanimous Decision of all the leaders, we will do our duty. Secondly, there is also the moral part, as the municipal authority took over in 2019 and had this Decision earlier. With one voice, all municipal factions, as will be emphasized in the Municipal Council, we do not wish in any case a conflict with the church, that’s why and in terms of decency and understanding we will seek to implement this Decision”.
The announcement of Kounoupidian Parish
The Kounoupidian Parish and the Protosygelos Nikiforos Eikosidekas formulate their own version of the matter in a statement.
In the announcement, responsibilities are assigned for the utilization of the concession by the Municipality, while the announcement of the tender for the auction of the 35 acres is characterized as “exploratory” in order to “examine the possibility of selling the property.”
Also, it is announced that the Ecclesiastical Council has revoked the initial decision to grant the property, since it was not utilized through the sole “fault of the Municipality”.
