Boris Johnson congratulated the Turkish President for the “valuable global leadership” that Turkey has shown.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke by phone on Friday.

Erdogan said he established “close dialogue” with Johnson during his tenure and developed relations between Ankara and London based on mutual respect and understanding, Turkey’s Communications Directorate said in a statement.

The president expressed his belief that relations with the United Kingdom will deepen and develop in all areas with the same common sense and foresight in the future.

The export of Ukrainian grain

Boris Johnson congratulated the Turkish President on the “valuable global leadership” that Turkey has shown, most recently helping to lift the Russian export ban on Ukrainian grain.

He also stressed the importance of continuing to support Ukraine, including by maintaining economic sanctions against Russia.

“They welcomed increased UK-Turkey trade and hoped to extend our existing free trade agreement to capitalize on the growing economic momentum. The leaders also discussed exciting new opportunities to increase cooperation in the field of defense technology and nuclear energy,” it added.

Johnson and Erdogan wished each other the best for the future and agreed that the relationship between the UK and Turkey will continue to evolve.
