An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred in the sea off Crete, according to an assessment by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located 30 kilometers south-southeast of Zakros.

The focal depth is estimated at 4.7 kilometers.

Lekkas is reassuring

The president of OASP Efthimios Lekkas appeared reassuringly about the strong earthquake of 5.2 Richter in Crete, speaking on the radio of SKAI 100.3 and Yiannis Pittaras and Giorgos Grigoriadis.

He explained that the tremor was in a marine environment quite far from Ierapetra and there is no cause for concern.

“Essentially, one can say that it is an aftershock of the big earthquake that happened months ago in south-eastern Crete, again in the same area”, stressed Mr. Lekkas.

He ruled out the possibility of it being connected to the earthquake in Samos, saying that these are completely different environments and context.

No damage reported – We’re used to it

No damage has been reported from the 5.2 Richter earthquake in the areas of southeastern Crete where the epicenter was located, said the mayor of Sitia, Giorgos Zervakis, speaking to SKAI 100.3 radio and Yiannis Pittaras and Giorgos Grigoriadis.

He added that the vibration was noticeable, there is always a concern among the residents, “but the truth is that we are used to it”.
