With Julianne Moore presiding over the jury and with guest star the ageless Catherine Deneuve, Mostra, the oldest film festival, a precursor to the Oscars, begins tonight in Venice.

Catherine Deneuve, as guest of honor, will walk the red carpet tonight to receive, at the age of 78, the Golden Lion for her entire career. The French star has already won the award for first female role for her performance in Nicole Garcia’s Under the Square Lights.

When asked by AFP about the meaning of this award, the bronzed actress replied: “We are not looking back. It’s not a refusal, but because I don’t have the time, mainly because of that.”

The competition part will start with the official screening of the film “White Noise” (White Noise), a creator of another generation, New Yorker Noah Baubach, based on a novel by Don DeLillo.

The 52-year-old director in this film collaborates again with his favorite performers, his partner Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver. “It’s a film about life and death. We have to accept that these two go together,” he said at the press conference.

In total, the competition section features 23 feature films (eight by female filmmakers). The awards will be announced on September 10.

Many celebrities are expected to be in Venice in the coming days, such as Cate Blanchett, the star of the film “Tár”, by Todd Field, as well as Penelope Cruz, who is participating in two films.

Also present at the festival will be the Cuban actress Ana de Armas, who last year stood out as James Bond’s “girl” and this year took on the challenge of portraying Marilyn Monroe, 60 years after the death of the legendary actress.

Cinephiles are also anxiously awaiting the arrival of British pop ‘phenomenon’ Harry Styles, who stars in his partner Olivia Wilde’s film Don’t Worry Darling.

Alejandro González Iñárritu returns to the Venice festival with the film “The Revenant”, while Darren Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream” and Joanna Hogg, starring Tilda Swinton, will also be screened.

Jafar Panahi, who is imprisoned in Iran, veterans Walter Hill and Paul Schrader and young French directors Romain Gavras and Rebecca Zlotovsky are also in the running for the Golden Lion.

Novelist Florian Zeller, after the success of “Father” with Anthony Hopkins, this year presents “Son”, an adaptation of another of his works, starring Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.
