The first phase of the bidding process for the concession of the international airport of Kalamata “Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos” will begin in the next few days, at the beginning of September, according to what was reported in the meeting of the MP of Messinia Periklis Mandas with the managing director of the Superfund Grigoris Dimitriadis.

This is, as stated in a statement from the Political Office of Mr. Manda, “essentially for the start of the main tender process, which concerns the call for expressions of interest from investment schemes that intend to undertake the upgrading, reformation and operation of the airport for the next years”.

As Mr. Dimitriadis informed the MP, “the course of the privatization of the airport is progressing normally according to the schedule without significant delays, as during the previous period all the studies by the technical advisers of the Superfund were completed and the new business plan was prepared. With the end of this phase, the Superfund has now completed the preparation of the tender process and is one step ahead of the publication of the official call for interest, which includes all the points that require improvement of the airport’s infrastructure and equipment.

In this context, the Superfund has focused on a radical improvement of the airport’s facilities, with the aim of upgrading the overall travel experience of visitors, to the standards of other regional airports granted in recent years. The new business plan is based on interventions in the building facilities with at least a tripling of the square meters used, expansion of the aircraft parking area, upgrading of the fuel facilities, expansion of the car parking area, modernization of the security systems and overall improvement of the image and aesthetics of the airport premises”.

For his part, Mr. Mantas acknowledged that “the Superfund has moved quickly, in order to respect the schedule and advance the tender”. At the same time, he thanked Mr. Dimitriadis for the detailed information he provided, noting that “in all their meetings from March 2021 until today, it has become clear that the management of the Superfund has realized the importance of the specific project for Messinia and the Peloponnese, taking care with technocratic efficiency to organize the competition, avoiding unnecessary obstacles and delays”.

The MP also informed Mr. Dimitriadis about the particularly good performance of the airport this year, which is expected to keep investment interest at high levels. At the same time, he noted that “everyone recognizes that the international airport of Kalamata has significant development prospects, as well as that its upgrade creates expectations for an even greater tourist flow to the southern Peloponnese, strengthening the development dynamics of both Messinia and the surrounding areas”.
