“Ksou Ksou”: App… mosquito repellent

--

At a time when the alarm has been raised due to the large increase in the mosquito population and already the Region of Central Macedonia is starting emergency spraying in specific areas, an application comes to drive away mosquitoes and their annoying sound. Just a few days ago, a mobile app went live that… repels mosquitoes with the push of a button. Its name, in fact, indicates the desired effect one will have with the use of “Ksou Ksou”.

The … hunter of annoying insects is a 25-year-old from Larissa, who developed the application so that, as he says, the world does not suffer from “uninvited visitors”.

“The best defense mechanism of all living things is adaptability. Similarly, the mosquitoes, as long as we put mosquito repellents and snakes to repel them, they get used to the smell and therefore it is very difficult to get rid of them” says Christos Apostolou in “NEA”.

So, according to him, by pressing just one button, a sound file is activated from the mobile phone’s speaker that cannot be perceived by the human ear due to the special frequencies. However, these frequencies – from 12Hz to 200Hz – can irritate mosquitoes. It is worth noting that the human ear may perceive from 22Hz and above.

In Greece there are more than 60 species of mosquitoes and as Christos says, the way the sound will affect them depends on their… appetite – after all, the females are the ones that bite -, on the breeding season and also on the area where they operate . “We can all have an electronic mosquito repellent and without it being harmful to the environment. Through the free application, the user can choose between five different types of frequencies,” emphasizes the 25-year-old creator. He adds that similar applications had been released in the past with audio frequencies, but without upgrading them.

The 7th application

“Ksou Ksou” is not Christos’ first foray into the world of mobile apps. In fact, it is the seventh and the most impressive thing is that the 25-year-old is self-taught in the world of application development. As he explains, his love for technological systems began when he was 12 years old. “I like to be given social problems and I like to find their technological solution, and applications now give me this possibility, since we all now have mobile phones.”

His entry into the Agricultural School gave him “food” for the first three applications he made. “The first was an application for complete crop protection and fertilizer use, a free tool for farmers, producers and agronomists. The second one could be characterized as a book about the wild nature of Greece, which includes more than 5,000 photos of animal and plant species. The third application was created after the devastating fires in North Evia last year. It is essentially an environmental education game where the user comes into contact with definitions and tries through an anagram to find the words to pass to the next level.”

In the past, in fact, Christos created an application and the reason was the increase in femicide incidents.

“PANICosGR is an ‘alert’ that allows any person under stress and needing help to quickly and silently send an automated help message in an emergency. In essence, it collects information about the exact location of the person at risk and sends it to a user that the person using the application himself has designated in advance.
