Students trapped the rector of the University of Patras in his office – “I’m not afraid of anything” he says

The rector of the University of Patras, Christos Bouras, is locked in his office, as students are blocking his exit, as reported by the media of Patras.

According to gnomip.gr, the rector broadcasts “SOS”, as protesting students also guard his car, so that he does not manage to leave, while he remains trapped in the rector’s building.

The same information states that these are students of the Department of Civil Engineering.

According to pelop.gr, the protest is taking place because four students are not allowed to take exams in June.

Mr. Bouras has been asking for help from the authorities for some time, but so far they have not responded and the situation remains tense, writes the same Media, which adds that the rector has been locked in the building since 12 noon.

“For 4 hours now, the Rector of the University of Patras has been trapped in his office and his car is being guarded so that he does not use it to escape. I want to state unequivocally that I am not afraid of anything and I will not leave the University.

Today at the University we will announce the Olympian Mr. N. Kaklamanakis as an Honorary Professor. Let the Political System take its responsibilities and break the guilty silences. Everyone knows and is aware.

Such anti-democratic and interventionist actions must stop and those who support them must be condemned.

The Public University belongs to everyone and has no owners.”

The rector of the University of Patras claimed that he remains blocked and that he has appealed to all the authorities.

Statement by the vice-president of the Democrats Th. Papatheodoros about the trapped rector of Patras

The vice-president of the “Democrats”, Th. Papatheodorou, stated in this regard:

“The rector of the University of Patras, Mr. Christos Bouras, has been trapped in his office for the last few hours and every exit of him and his colleagues has been blocked by known “strangers”.

Why are the various self-justice professionals punishing him? Why does he intend to initiate the disciplinary process for students who harassed a professor and department chair of the University of Patras.

The Rector – as he had to – informed the police and the Ministry. Before the heavy-handed but easy statements about security and freedom in Universities start again, it would be good for the Police and the Ministry to observe the legality and serve the responsibility assigned to them by the State.

Violence and insecurity in Universities can no longer be tolerated by the very authorities who are supposed to fight it.
