Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that US, British and French support for Ukraine is fueling serious strategic risks, raising the possibility of a direct confrontation between the world’s biggest nuclear powers.

Lavrov assessed that the US and NATO are obsessed with the idea of achieving a “strategic defeat” in Russia and added that there is a risk that this confrontation could lead to an increased level of nuclear danger.

“The West is heading dangerously to the brink of a direct military conflict between nuclear powers, which will have devastating consequences,” the Russian minister stressed.

“Of particular concern is the fact that the ‘troika’ of Western nuclear countries are among the main financiers of the criminal regime in Kiev, the main instigators of various provocative steps. We see strategic risks in this, leading to an increase in the level of nuclear danger,” Lavrov added.

The three Western countries that have nuclear weapons are the US, Britain and France.

Duda: “Poland is ready to receive nuclear weapons”

Poland is ready to welcome nuclear weapons on its soil if NATO, of which it is a member, decides to strengthen its eastern flank to counter Russia’s deployment of new weapons in Kaliningrad and Belarus, the Polish president said in an interview of that published today.

“If our allies decided to deploy nuclear weapons on our territory to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern flank, we are ready to do so,” Andrei Duda explained to the Fakty newspaper.

The Polish head of state, who is currently in Canada following a visit to the United States where he met former President Donald Trump and went to the UN, added that the issue of a possible development of nuclear weapons in Poland has been “here for some time » subject of discussions between Poland and the United States.

“I have already repeatedly raised this issue,” he declared. Duda had met in March with his American counterpart Joe Biden. According to Duda, “Russia is increasingly militarizing the Kaliningrad enclave. It is moving its nuclear weapons to Belarus.” These are two territories bordering Poland.

In June 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had transferred the first nuclear weapons to Belarus. At the 2023 summit in Vilnius, the allies had reaffirmed that NATO would do “whatever is necessary to ensure the credibility, effectiveness, safety and security of its nuclear deterrence mission, including by continuing to modernize its nuclear capabilities and update its design process.”
