Nikolaos and Tatiana Blatnik chose to go their separate ways, after 14 years of marriage. The announcement of their divorce fell like a bomb, since nothing foreshadowed their separation.

The son of the last king of Greece, Constantine, Nikolaos, and Tatiana Blatnik were united in marriage in 2010, in Spetses.

At the wedding, which had been characterized as “Mamma Mia, but with aristocrats”, attended by royalty from all over the world, including those of the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Spain.

But the “down-to-earth” Tatiana Blatnik, as a Daily Mail report called her, already seemed to be contradicting the extravagance of the former Greek royal family’s life, asking the nobles and princes present to change their official their clothes with kaftans and sandals…

Shortly after the brilliant wedding, Tatiana Blatnik admitted:

“I don’t feel like a princess. I don’t feel like I married a prince, with a title. Actually, yes, he is my prince, but nothing more.’

As the Daily Mail reports, “despite their long-term relationship, which seemed idyllic in the eyes of others, the couple may have had sharp differences even from the beginning…».

The British publication notes, characteristically, that although Nikolaos loves Greece with all his heart, the adjustment for his wife was difficult when they moved permanently to our country in 2013.

Tatiana Blatnik appeared to adopt the royal life of the former Glyxburg royal family, but is said to have never felt completely at home in Greece and she was more comfortable in jeans and sneakers than wearing her princely tiara.

Her relationship with Greece and her marriage to Nikolaos

About meeting and falling in love with Nikolaos, Tatiana Blatnik had said in an earlier interview:

“It’s a long story… not for an interview, but maybe for a novel! But, to make a long story short, we met in the village where I grew up in Switzerland. He was a friend of my brothers, but also of my mother. We had a long courtship. He was very romantic, sending me flowers, calling me… and that went on for almost two years, until one day I gave in and I haven’t looked back since.”

“I enjoy the simple things in Greece, like going to the grocery store, which I love because I cook. It took me a long time to get used to eating late dinners in Greece, but now I’ve adjusted to most things. I cook, clean, peel carrots and potatoes, walking the dog, walking in nature, taking care of the plumbing that doesn’t work…just like everyone else! If I thought I was beautiful, well-off, a princess and everything was perfect, I wouldn’t be sitting here discussing all these things,” she pointed out.

“I want to show the world that it’s okay not to be perfect. The first time I saw Greece, it was through the eyes of my husband. I envied Greece, because Nikolaos was very much in love with her and she was like the “other” woman in the house. When I moved now, I let go and created my own Greece.

I love Zagorochoria, Pelion, the mountains, the inland routes, Crete. I like to surprise others but I don’t like being surprised. After 12 years of marriage, what still pleasantly surprises me about my husband is his patience and kindness,” added Tatiana Blatnik.

Although the couple never had children, she had mentioned, however, that:

“Being an aunt is one of the greatest blessings in my life. My niece and nephew bring so much joy and happiness to everyone in our family. Despite their age and being one of the best teachers, they are constantly teaching me new things.”
