A glider – probably belonging to the Maleme air club, according to Cretan media – fell into the sea, signaling an alarm to the competent authorities.
According to information from the Coast Guard, investigations are currently underway by the National Search and Rescue Coordination Center to locate the glider and its crew, which include – among others – a Coast Guard vessel, a Navy helicopter, 2 cruise ships and 2 fishing boats.
As reported by parakritika.gr, a small light can be seen in the sea, possibly showing where the glider has sunk, which is unknown how it fell into the sea.
According to information from flashnews.gr, the aircraft with two passengers had taken off from the area of Kopaida bound for the airport in Maleme, which is used by this type of small aircraft.
But because it was dark, the pilot made a turn over Kolymbari in order to approach the runway from the sea side and suddenly his signal was lost.
