In a video just six seconds long, far-right candidate Giorgia Meloni sent a message of innuendo ahead of today’s Italian election by holding two melons.

The president of the nationalist party, “Brothers of Italy” went ahead in a post on her personal TikTok account that was also reproduced by the party’s YouTube account, holding two melons in her hands. In Italian melons are called “melons”, a word similar to her last name.

In the related video, Meloni appears to wink slyly and say “I said it all”.

As the Italian “La Stampa” reports, it is clear that the far-right candidate in some way breaks the pre-election “silence” a few hours before the polls close in Italy. However, in substance, she makes no direct reference to herself or her party.

Earlier, as it became known, Georgia Meloni decided to postpone the exercise of her right to vote until tonight at 10 (local time), i.e. an hour before the polls close.

Countdown to the exit polls

Meanwhile, Italy is on a countdown with just under 3 hours to go before the polls close (11:00 p.m. local time – midnight Greek time) in the country’s parliamentary elections with polls, if verified, for the first time in the country to take power the most far-right government in its post-war history.

The Nationalist Party of Georgia MeloniBrothers of Italy” (Fratelli d’Italia), the Eurosceptic, also far-right party, “League” by Matteo Salvini and the right “Forza Italia‘, by Silvio Berlusconi, may well secure a clear majority tonight.

The polling stations will close at midnight Greek time. Once the polls are closed, the results of a series of exit polls are expected to be made public. According to data from the Italian Interior Ministry, turnout by 19:00 local time stood at 51%, a marked drop from the 2018 election.

The prospect of an Italian government under far-right Giorgia Meloni worries Brussels, especially over the issue of sanctions against Moscow, but diplomats and experts do not see Rome of the right/far-right alliance, the favorite in Sunday’s election, taking over. risk of renouncing the huge package of European resources secured by Mario Draghi’s government for Italy.

This coalition sends contradictory messages, which worry the EU and NATO. On the one hand, Georgia Meloni presents herself as pro-Atlantic, while on the other hand Salvini and Berlusconi present themselves as quite tolerant of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
