Ibrahim Kalin: A meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdogan in Prague is not ruled out

The representative of the Turkish president, Ibrahim Kalin, did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Prague.

We are looking at various messages

As Ibrahim Kalin pointed out in his television interview, there are currently no scheduled meetings with Mr. Mitsotakis, however he noted that “various messages are coming and we are examining them”.

Mr. Kalin, in an interview with the television network NTV, noted that a possible meeting will be judged by the steps taken by the Greek side until then, and specifically said:

If he takes one step, he will take two

“Our president does not exclude anyone. If one step is taken, our president takes two steps. Various messages are coming. We are looking into them. I cannot say from now whether the meeting will take place or not. We will see what steps will be taken until then. It depends on the steps taken by the Greek side. At the moment there are no scheduled meetings with Mitsotakis.”

On October 6, the New EU+ Summit will be held in Prague, to which Turkey has been invited.

Ready to meet him

It is recalled that during the press conference at the TIF, Kyriakos Mitsotakis had stated that he was open to a meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“I am ready to meet him and he does not wish to see me. I appreciate that we will meet again. There are opportunities in the coming months, in Prague, the EPK meeting that will be Turkey. However, he should know that in a European forum he will obviously be confronted with the Greek argumentation and will be asked to answer if this extremity is consistent with a country that wants relations with Europe”.

While in the same direction, the prime minister in his interview with Bloomberg yesterday emphasized:

Erdogan refuses, I am always open for discussion

“It is our destiny by geography to live together. And as I have told him many times, we should be able to agree that even when we disagree, we should do so in a civilized manner. Challenging the sovereignty of a NATO ally is obviously unacceptable. It is not going to be tolerated by Greece, and it basically shows Turkey as a country that is no longer part of what we usually call, the Western alliance.

President Erdogan refuses, during this time, to meet with me. I have said openly that I am always open to discussion and believe that it is in the interest of regional stability to significantly tone down the rhetoric. He’s not helping anyone, I think, not even himself, if he continues down this path.”
