Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a clear message in all directions from the UN platform, highlighting Turkey’s destabilizing role in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Caucasus, saying that it uses the language of an aggressor and not a partner and ally of NATO.
The message to the Turkish people
In fact, the prime minister, using the platform of the UN, directly addressed the Turkish people, noting that Greece is not a danger and a threat to the neighboring country, and after formulating the red lines of our country, speaking of the unacceptable demands of the Turkish leadership for the Aegean islands, he expressed the wish for a new beginning in the relations between the two countries with respect to international law.
“You have already heard me and know that I am always open to dialogue with respect for the observance of international law. Turkey is an important NATO member country, Turkey could be a partner of the EU if it wants to. It can play an important role, for example, with the export of Ukrainian grain. But it continues to play a destabilizing role in the Caucasus, the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. It is also the only NATO country that does not apply sanctions against Russia.”
Language of an attacker and not a defender
“He is obsessed with my country. We heard from their lips that “they will come some night” noted Mr. Mitsotakis referring to the well-known phrase of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, noting that “he uses more and more warlike language” and “this is the language used by an aggressor and not a peacemaker. (including Turkey) builds a narrative for the Aegean after the Imia and makes demands against the islands. There is still a casus beili before Imia and today Turkey is even questioning the sovereign rights and sovereignty of our eastern islands that were secured 100 years ago” stressed the prime minister and referred to the multiple violations in the airspace, at the same time speaking of ” unilateral decision to refuse any dialogue” on the part of Ankara.
“Is this attitude acceptable from a member of the UN? From a player on the international scene?’ asked Mr. Mitsotakis before the UN saying that “they are undermining peace in the Eastern Mediterranean while there is a war in Ukraine”.
I will never accept as prime minister the abuse of our independence
Referring to the red lines, the prime minister said that our sovereignty is a red line and called “the Turkish demands for the Aegean islands absolutely unacceptable. I will never accept as prime minister that they abuse our independence and our sovereign rights, even verbally.”
“Greece and Turkey have many years of peaceful coexistence after the drama of 2022,” concluded Mr. Mitsotakis and added: “I want to address the Turkish people. Greece is not a danger and does not pose any threat to your country. We are your friends.”
The two peoples do not want enmity
“The majority of the two peoples do not want this situation to continue, they do not want the enmity. With respect to international law, let’s make a new beginning” was the concluding message of the Greek Prime Minister.
The coast guard has saved thousands of people
Especially with regard to the refugee, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, deconstructing Erdogan’s speech from the same stage, spoke of fake news, a disinformation campaign and a provocative policy on behalf of Ankara, accusing it of exploiting immigrants and refugees, making special reference to the events of Evros in March of 2020.
“And we could cooperate with Turkey in immigration matters,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, emphasizing that “our coast guard has saved thousands of people at sea.”
At the beginning of his speech, Mr. Mitsotakis reiterated the EU’s clear support for Ukraine, saying that “it is imperative that the Russian invasion does not succeed, in order to send a message to other authoritarian regimes.”
Referring to the energy crisis, he said that Russia is using natural gas as a weapon. “We have to become independent of Russian gas,” he noted, while regarding the economic impact on the West, he emphasized that this is the price for anyone who wants to stand on the right side of history.
Illegal occupation of Cyprus
Immediately after, he referred to the illegal occupation of Cyprus and the partition of the island, calling Ankara’s demands unreasonable and supporting the UN Secretary-General’s proposal for a mutually acceptable solution, which the Turkish government and the leadership of the pseudo-state still reject. Mr. Mitsotakis expressed our country’s strong disagreement with Turkey’s position on two states.
Mr. Mitsotakis also spoke about climate change, while also referring to the Parthenon Marbles, making it clear that, however necessary, they will return to Greece
