Rediscovered Johnny Cash songs have been included in a new album to be released by his son, John Carter Cash.

“Songwriter”

The album, titled Songwriter, was originally recorded by country singer Johnny Cash at LSI Studios in Nashville in 1993, a decade before his death at the age of 71.

The record label was owned by his family members and it is believed that he wanted to help them financially as well as record the songs.

After a slump in record sales, Cash met rock rap producer Rick Rubin and he shelved the songs.

The two recorded four critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums, the first of which was ‘American Recordings’ which won a 1994 Grammy, garnered a younger audience and led to Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ song ‘Hurt ” In 2002.

30 years later

More than 30 years later, Cash’s son and wife June Carter Cash will release the 11 songs featuring his father’s vocals and acoustic guitar.

Featuring contributions from country singer Vince Gill and the rock band Black Keys, the final recordings were made by a group of musicians who had previously played with Cash, guitarist Marty Stewart, drummer Pete Abbott and bassist David Roe, who has since died. in 2023.

Promotional material for the album promises songs about “love, family, sadness, beauty, spiritual salvation, survival, redemption and of course the lighthearted humor that Johnny was known for.”
