Would you go see this Unboxholics movie?

People will always be drawn to the personal stories of conquest, the ones made against all odds, that the song says. And Unboxholics have such a story to tell with it film them entitled Don’t Open The Door which will be released on Thursday in theaters.

Of course, how can such a successful duo, who have certainly made good money in the 12 years they’ve been in the YouTube world and have built a strong website, be considered to have hit the big waves? What do other creators have to say?

Here the against all odds is that they had no connection to the cinema before this film, they are making their first attempt, and always rookies, especially when they have a dominant quality, such as Youtubersare treated as falling stars, as passers-by.

Anyway, the Unboxholics themselves, the two Karpades, Sakis and Alexandros, communicate this film as an excess on their part.

Don’t Open The Door is an honest first effort that might serve as bait for producers and actors to be a part of the next one, but that’s about it.

Let’s take them in order.

A man lives in a house in the mountains, all alone, without a mobile phone, without a car, and relies on the appearance of a friend every 2 weeks, who brings him what he needs. One night a girl knocks on his door desperately and with anxiety and fear. She asks him to open for her. He opens for her. And this will lead to destruction.

The girl explains to him that she had gone with a group of biologists to a clearing to investigate the flora, but in the night she saw something attacking them and ran to save herself. For the next three days they will go out to look for the others in the mornings and in the evenings they will face the constructions of darkness.

The two have no names, they are never mentioned in the film. She is the reclusive lumberjack and the timid biologist. The second has lied in order to get the man to talk about the loss of his son. And then with the intention of punishing him.

Unboxholics’ film has 3-4 good jumpscare points, but the script fails to create a certain context for the viewer to understand what is going on. We get to the finale to get an edge and until the finale, there is too much uncertainty.

In general, the script suffers in many places and if it wasn’t for Fotini Levoyannis to support it acting in some scenes, it would be completely lost. Sakis Karpas cannot support his acting role in the dialogic parts and it is the moments without words that keep the interest.

Of course, the good direction, the very good picture, the excellent sound and the music by Kid Moxie, which is awesome, play a role in this. But in a narrative, when something overshadows its main element, the story itself, the ball has been lost somewhere. Villages where there were two or three scenes where the music didn’t match the vibe with the feeling of the respective scene.

What did not satisfy us, is that there is no investment on the title. We get to the end to find out it’s only because he opened the door to the biologist and doesn’t have a follow up on the prompt.

It’s a first step, Unboxholics have no obligation to please anyone but themselves and their audience second, but undoubtedly, when you expose yourself, you have to expect criticism.

This film showed a good directorial potential, it would have been different if neither of the two starred, but a professional actor, but at the end of the day, these are tastes.

Unboxholics seems to have set pre-sales records, but that doesn’t say anything about its film value, because it’s obvious that when you’ve built up an audience of a few hundred thousand over so many years, who look up to you fanatically and feel like they’re their own person, you’re going to support your every venture, like a mother her child.

“Don’t Open the Door” is overall very abstract, even its premise as revealed at the end doesn’t clarify much, it comes out of nowhere, but is saved by its aforementioned technical elements, plus editing.
