Will Smith is returning to the big screen as he is set to star in a new sci-fi film. “Brilliance” will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid Shinoy, with Will Smith producing alongside Akiva Goldsman.

Will Smith is also in talks to star in the film, which will be his first major starring role since the slapping incident at the Oscars, but his involvement has yet to be confirmed.

Will Smith in the film is expected to play Nick Cooper, the hero of Marcus Seiki’s novel of the same name, who is a federal agent working for the Division of Analysis and Intervention.

“The ‘Brilliance’ trilogy takes place in a future where non-neurotypical people (demonized by society) as ‘abnormal’ threaten the status quo of the ‘normal’ population with their unique gifts. They are officially designated as ‘Brilliants’ and are closely watched by the government,” reads a description of the plot, published by Deadline.

Will Smith will also appear in the pre-Oscar Apple TV+ thriller Emancipation, in which he plays an escaped slave in Louisiana.

The actor suffered a “very significant” drop in popularity after the episode, where he slapped Oscar host Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
