Athens Observatory: Second coldest August this year in Greece since 2010 | News about the Economy

August 2022 it was one of the hottest months on record in Europe in the last century, however, the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as our country, were exception, in accordance with meteo of the National Observatory of Athens.

In all of Greece, the average maximum daily temperature in August was below the 2010-2019 average. This is mainly due to the prevalence of particularly low pressures in the Central Mediterranean and unusually high pressures in Northeast Europe, a combination that often caused instability in our region and the occurrence of precipitation.

During August this year, 53 weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr recorded negative deviations of the average maximum daily temperature. Although in the first ten days of the month the temperature fluctuated slightly above the normal levels for the season, the second half of the month was particularly “cold”, with the exception of the period of high temperatures between August 17 and 19 when there were positive temperature deviations of up to + 5 degrees Celsius.

For the Peloponnese and Central Greece it was the second coldest August since 2010while for Western Greece and the Aegean Islands it was the third coldest (fifth for Crete).

At Macedonia, Central Greece and the Aegean Islands up to 27 days with negative temperature deviations were recorded (“Samos is the champion”) out of the total 31 days of the month. In Athens, the meteorological station in Gazi recorded 25 days with a maximum temperature lower than the normal levels for the season and an average monthly deviation of -1.3°C. In Thessaloniki the average maximum temperature fluctuated closer to the average of the period 2010-2019, with 15 days of negative temperature deviations.
