His Eminence the Metropolitan of Maroneia and Komotini, etc. Panteleimonos

A young man dialogues with Christ. The young man of the Gospel approached Christ saying “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”, but from Christ’s mouth he did not hear demagogic words and flattery, he heard truths. And he even heard a truth, which was bitter medicine for him. And his body couldn’t take this medicine, he didn’t want to take it and he died. He was an eagle of the spirit. He had reached a great height. Christ reminds him of the commandments of the law and the young man replies “These things I kept from my youth.” Everything that you tell me, Christ, I have observed since I was a small child.

But the eagle was asking to climb to a higher peak. And this peak is called eternal life. Eternal life! The rational man of our time will smile ironically. This, he will tell us, is what you theologians do. Instead of talking about the problems of this life, about the tangible, you talk about the invisible. Instead of fighting for this life, which we live, you transfer the problem of life to another world; you talk about the other life, which we do not know if it exists. Be realistic.

This is roughly what a rationalist will tell us, who will hear us talk about eternal life. Only those who have climbed the first peak see that there is a second peak. And only he who has climbed to the top of morality sees clearly in front of him that there is another top, the top of eternity.

And the young man of the Gospel believed that this peak exists, that there is eternal life and he longed for it, he longed to conquer it. He longed for the heights and that is why he came to Christ. Christ showed him the poor who are suffering and said to him: “If you want to be perfect, go ahead and sell your possessions and give to the poor…”. As if Christ were saying to him: Do you long to find the way that leads to eternal life? So I tell you that this road passes through the huts of the poor, through the beds of the sick.

The way to the kingdom of heaven necessarily goes through love, charity, sacrifice. These three would free the rich young man from the burden that was tied to him. These three would enable him to fly lightly into eternal life. The suffering youth did not want to break away from the love of wealth. The love of wealth drowned out the love of others. But he also stifled his love for himself. He didn’t really love himself either. Because he let him sink.
