The former president of the Supreme Court, George Kalamidas, has died

The former president of the Supreme Court, George Kalamidas, died at the age of 78. His funeral will take place on Monday, September 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Cemetery of Athens.

The deceased was born in Agrinio in 1944. He studied at the Law School of the University of Athens, from which he graduated in 1967. He entered the judiciary in 1972, as a salaried attorney at the Court of First Instance of Athens. In 1974 he became a Court of First Instance and in 1985 president of the Court of First Instance. In 1990 he was promoted to Appellant, in 2002 to president of Appellate Courts and in 2004 he became Areopagitis. On July 3, 2009, he was elected president of the Supreme Court, a position he held until June 30, 2011.

The Union of Judges and Prosecutors expresses its deepest regret for the death of George Kalamidas, in a statement in which the following is also highlighted about the deceased: “From the position of President of the Supreme Court, he decisively contributed to the achievement of a climate of calm and fraternal solidarity within the judiciary but also highlighted the chronic problems in the field of Justice. However, the kindness and gentleness of his character, his human-centered approach to the challenges of our time, his rare culture and his consistent adherence to his Principles, as well as his non-negotiable morals, will remain indelibly in our memory.
