The registration of equines in Greece is mandatory from October 21

The registration of horses in our country in the Central Electronic Database of Horses (KEBDI) is mandatory from October 21.

The framework for the protection of equines in our country becomes stronger from October 21, the date on which the Central Electronic Database of Equines (KIBDI) will officially “premiere”, six months after the publication of the Ministerial Decision, which had signed by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Simos Kedikoglou.

Owners of equines will be required to maintain a constantly updated record, at the Veterinary services of the Regions to which they belong, where they will includes information related to:

– the identity of the equine (Date of birth, Date of death, Description, Name, Microchip number, Unique lifetime equine number, etc.),

– the equine accommodation facilities (Identification details of the person in charge of the facility, Headquarters of the facility, Facility code, Date of entry of each equine into the facility, etc.),

– those in charge of the equine animals (identification information, detailed list of the equine animals for which he is responsible, etc.)

– equine identification documents (Type of identification document, Date of issue, etc.),

– the bodies issuing the identification documents.

Regarding the legislative framework governing the protection of equidae as working animals, in breeding and during their transport in accordance with the Union legislation (Regulation 1/2005 of the European Council) rules are regulated for the transport of equidae of all categories including permitted travel distances , resting, watering and feeding, as well as proper loading and unloading in the approved means of transport. Also Commission Directive 98/58 “on the protection of animals on farms” regulates rules for the protection of animals in all types of farms including hippopotamus.

The national legislation respectively, with the Law “On the protection of animals” (Law 1197/81 (A’ 240), according to an information note of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, regulates matters of welfare of equine work and farms including the euthanasia procedure and sanctions in case of non-compliance.

In addition, the guidelines of the World Organization for Animal Health regarding the protection of working horses apply.

Finally, the Directorate General of Veterinary Medicine and the Directorate of Animal Protection, Medicines and Veterinary Applications of the PHAAT, participate with their representatives in the voluntary working subgroup of the European Commission’s Platform for the protection of animals with regard to the protection of equines, from which they will emerge updated guidelines for the protection of equines working in tourism (December 2022).
