Second thoughts seem to prevail in the Ministry of Environment and Energy regarding the revocation of concession of the gaze Achlada Lignite Mines in Florina to the company of the same name and its return to the public with the prospect of continuing its operation from PPC. A month and a half after the decision of the competent minister Kostas Skrekas to preach discounted the Achladas Lignite Mines company, the owners continue to operate the mine and extract lignite which they export to North Macedonia. The information confirmed by competent sources has the owner Mr. Christos Pavlidis to be in collusion with MINISTRY OF but also the PPC in order to find an acceptable common solution that will allow the operation of the field to continue by the Achladas Lignite Mine.

In fact, according to the same information, within the next week the discussions are expected to take on an official character in order to speed up the solution that will solve the power supply problems Melitis. Circles of the Ministry of the Interior, indirectly confirming this information, emphasize that once the company pays the debts to the public, which was the main reason for the revocation of the concession decision, then it can challenge the ministerial decision and continue to operate it.

The company is said to have proceeded with the debt settlement process amounting to 4.7 million euros approximately to the public from the non-payment of rent while he is also in discussions with PPC to improve the contract between them. The Skrekas decision also referred to it non-compliance of the company’s contractual obligations towards PPC for “minimum annual production of 2,000,000 tons of lignite by 675,510.58 tons for the year 2018 and by 585,442.65 tons for 2019”.

Intensively the South Field for Ptolemais V

The supply of Melitis had been based on the Achlada mine since its construction, which faced serious obstacles over the years. Today and in the absence of deliveries from the Achladas Lignite Mine, the Melitis unit is supplied by the South Field and a small private mine in Servia Kozani.

The government’s decision to double lignite production on an annual basis for the next two to three years makes it necessary to develop new fields and in the government’s initial plans, in addition to the Achlada deposits, was also the reopening of Vevis which has stopped extracting lignite for about a year and a half, from PPC. So far, however, no action has been taken in this direction.

On the contrary, work is progressing at an intensive pace South Field , in order to increase the stocks in view of the winter in order to be able to support the continuous operation of the five units of Ag. Dimitriou and Melita, but also the new unit Ptolemais V. Within the next few days, tests on the fuel loading and transport systems to the mills and boiler of the unit will be completed, while in September it is expected to be put into trial operation and in December into commercial operation, offering the system 660 MW of valuable cheap power in a very critical occasion.
