Power has been restored in Sierra Leone after weeks of blackouts as the country paid part of the $48 million bill owed to a Turkish company.

By paying the installment of 18 million dollars, the country’s energy minister resigned, taking full responsibility for the crisis. The country’s president, Julius Bio, announced that the ministry would come under his supervision.

Most of the electricity in the capital Freetown comes from a Turkish ship off the country’s coast.

Last week, Karpowership said it had drastically reduced supply to the city – from 60 megawatts to 6 megawatts – due to unpaid bills. However, the holidays continued for a much longer period of time.
