Where should we shop for Easter?

--

In view of the Easter table, where we usually give our “change”, we make a price comparison of the products in the supermarkets of Greece and those of Bulgaria.

In the final stretch for his table Easter we decided that it would be of some interest to see how much the things we will need that day cost in the supermarkets of Greece and how much money we would pay for the same products in Bulgaria.

The choice of the country for the third supermarket price clash (Greece vs Germany, Greece vs Spain) was targeted. In a conversation I had with a friend who lives in Thessaloniki, he reminded me how many people cross the border to secure much cheaper gas.

First I was jealous and then I remembered a friend from my childhood (see the vacation in a city in Northern Greece) who always made his life difficult to save euros (while he never had this need – on the contrary) and as the head of the family he does the shopping of the week in his supermarket Sandanski.

It is the first town that anyone who crosses the border of Greece to Bulgaria (at a distance of 27 kilometers) finds, where as I was assured by those in the know “everyone speaks Greek in the shops”.

Also, many Greek companies have moved their units there, as the taxes are much lower. Thus, the products available in supermarkets are also cheaper.

THE TOOLS OF THE WORK

I “shopped” online, having previously searched and found the best deals on each product, with the help of Google Translate. It wasn’t very easy. I got lost in translation before I sent an SOS to a -third-friend who sent me a big chain flyer. In it I found the right words under the distinctive pictures – I reminisced about my preschool age.

Then I found out My Supermarket, which informs the citizens of the neighborhood every day about the best prices of all goods, in all supermarkets of the country. Apparently I also enlisted an app that converted leva (лева) to euros – based on the exchange rate on the day of my “visit”.

Still, of course, and so I never managed to find the goat and the tzatziki. I apologize and I am listing the ingredients you can use to make the salve.

SHOULD WE GO SHOPPING IN BULGARIA?

If I had to make a comment, it is that if you live in Athens it is probably not advisable to take the car and 1-2 friends and do 633 kilometers (in 6 hours and 41 minutes), to give 37.9 euros in tolls and 90.16 euros in petrol (46.45 euro to LPG the 55.93 euro to oil) times two, since you will also have to turn around. Unless you’re on a getaway and by the way, fill the trunk with items from the supermarket.

In areas closer to the border, this movement is probably convenient in any sense. To be clear, we are not proposing to destroy the Greek market. We are simply listing the data that many are already exploiting anyway.

Out of the 36 examples we have, only 7 were priced somewhat more expensive in Bulgaria. In most cases the price was double in Greece.

Take a deep breath and let’s begin.

Are you ready for a trip? Let me not forget to tell you that Sandanski is also famous for its thermal waters (there are also luxurious spas), while you will also find excellent food in restaurants and taverns. The shank is there “kutche” and the “siujuk” is the sausage. But don’t jump. They will explain it to you wonderfully in Greek.
