Art from garbage at Loggadon High School

--

On the occasion of World Earth Day, Loggadon High School created works of art from the school’s waste. “The planet against plastics” is the slogan of this year’s anniversary, a message with many recipients.

Today the risks to the natural environment and public health from plastics and microplastics are more threatening than ever. During our recent visit to the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, we were informed that the amount of plastic that ends up in the human body every week is the size of a bank card. We are also seeing an ever-increasing rate of animal deaths, which are either trapped in plastic packaging or fed on harmful pieces of plastic.

At the same time, while we see worldwide the consolidation of the culture of banning the use of plastic, many companies, especially those selling water, soft drinks and food items, continue to sell their products in plastic packaging.

For all these reasons, the students of Loggados High School decided to send their own message against the use of plastic.

The open-air structure draws its inspiration from the works of Canadian artist and activist BenjaminVonWong and represents a giant faucet, from which plastic flows instead of water. To complete the construction, the plastic bottles consumed by the students of our school during a four-month period were used.

The interior construction is a colorful wall “mosaic” of bottle caps. The original and large-scale composition represents the journey of a hot air balloon.

The Loggadon High School, with its announcement, warmly thanks the retired teacher of EPAS OAED Ioannina, Mr. Koukia Petros, for the kind sponsorship of the materials and the know-how for setting up the frame of the external structure.
