If the spontaneous cases tried at the Larissa Courthouse are a sample of the type of crime that is committed every day in Larisa then domestic violence cases are one of the most common cases of delinquent behavior.

In the shadow of her murder Sunday Griva by her ex-partner at the Police Department of Aghii Anargyro on April 1st, the majority of cases heard by either the Single-member or the Triple-member Bench in the past three weeks involved incidents of domestic violence of all family, educational and age types.

Ages from 23 to over 50 years old, from housewives until university graduates and from a relationship of one year up to wedding of three and decades. The only thing common in all cases was that the victim was a woman. The gender of the victims has been the only “constant” in every case that judges and prosecutors have heard in recent weeks, an element that characterizes the gendered dimension of the crime. Violence was also multifaceted. Threats over the phone and swearing, hitting with objects, and violently grabbing.

In Larissa in 2023 more than 300 incidents were recorded. According with the details of Larissanet in the first 109 days of 2024 (1/1/24 to 4/18/24) 109 incidents were recorded.

Faced with this problem pthe Larissa Police Department operates the Domestic Violence Office from 2022 which complements a series of structures that operate in the city and aim to protect victims of domestic and gender-based violence such as Women’s Hospitality Hostel and Counseling Center.

However, the case of Aghii Anargyri brought to the fore the bad reaction of the police officers as the victim actually appealed to the Police Department for help and did not receive help.

The bruises and handling
One Sunday night, the tension between a couple who separated a few months ago reached such a point that the employees of a store became alarmed and called 100. At the same time, the Domestic Family Office is also notified, which sends a patrol car to the scene.

The policeman who entered the apartment saw two young people upset and assessed that both of them were suspected of committing an offense and as a result both were taken to the department. There, both the girl and the young man said that nothing serious happened and the policeman, after not finding any ex officio prosecuted crime, advised them to resolve their differences peacefully and let them go.

However, when the boy left, the girl stayed behind and said she wanted to do a forensic examination, showing the bruises on her hands. The girl began to give a statement about the beatings that her ex-partner allegedly managed to achieve on her, along the way she regretted it, but as the police officer explained to her, since she reported all this to them, they were now obliged to act ex officio.

Eventually the case went to trial, the girl was examined by a medical examiner who certified that the injuries she sustained were consistent with those she reported, and the defendant was given a suspended prison sentence for domestic threats and simple bodily harm.

This procedure as it developed that night was testified a few days ago in the Autoforo Three-member Misdemeanor Court by the police officer of the Domestic Affairs Department who handled the case from the moment he arrived at the apartment where the altercation initially developed, until the final arraignment of the accused.

THE domestic violence is a crime that is prosecuted ex officio which means that the competent police services have the obligation to act immediately, when they are informed in any way, by the victim himself or by a third person, about the commission of any crime of domestic violence.

EL.AS pointed out the above directive on social networks. in a “crescendo” of informing citizens after the murder of Kyriaki Griva. The instructions also mention the use of the panic button, which is expected to be activated for victims of domestic violence in Larissa in 2024.
