Former US President Donald Trump had two words to say to his wife Melania Trump shortly before he entered court in New York where he is being tried over payments to former porn star Stormy Daniels.
“I want to start by wishing my wife Melania a very happy birthday,” he said, adding that “I should be with her, but I’m in court for a rigged trial.”
“She’s in Florida,” he said of his wife, who has not appeared in court at all. “I’m going over there tonight after this case is over, this horrible, unconstitutional case,” he said.
Melania Trump, as CNN notes, was absent during the former president’s trial — not surprising, of course, as the court deals with his extramarital affairs. He is also absent from the campaign trail as he tries to return to the White House.
At trial, Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to compensation for an associate, Michael Cohen, in order to pay porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 shortly before the 2016 presidential election.
The goal was to keep Daniels from talking about their liaisons several years earlier. The former president has denied all charges.
