“We are expecting a very difficult fire season. I want to prepare the world and society. Because in addition to firefighters, volunteers and security forces, we also want their help. It is a collective national effort” said the Minister of Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias.
Speaking to ANT1 about the summer fires and the fire season, Vassilis Kikilias said that this year “we have invested in prevention”.
“We announced 1.5 billion euros of projects in 9 months. 1,100 fire engines, the new canards, medium-sized helicopters, drones, weather stations, radars… Their receipt begins in 2025.
What will we do this year? We have invested in prevention.”
Mr. Kikilias said that DEDDIE and ADMIE are making fire zones in the forests. Fire zones will be created 100 meters around the camps. “For 40 years, no one has entered our forests, the fuel, to clean them,” said Vassilis Kikilias.
He pointed out that the misdemeanor of causing a fire by negligence is now a felony with a 10-year sentence. “I want to emphasize that because some few risk the lives of all of us,” he said.
