In the context of the environmental programs, “Nature does not need us, but we need nature” and “Water is the source of life”, a six-day educational excursion was held in Northern Greece, from 11/04/24 to 16/04/2024.

The excursion was attended by 36 students of the 1st and 2nd High School who were accompanied by 4 teachers.
The students and teachers of the 5th Gymnasium of Rhodes, for this special educational “wandering” in Northern Greece, state in their announcement the following:

“On a route of 1,200 kilometers, the students and teachers crossed 3 geographical regions (Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly), we visited 11 cities, towns and villages (Thessaloniki, Edessa, Vergina, Veria, Kastoria, Nymphaeum, Dispelio, St. Achillio , Psarades, Ioannina, Kalambaka) and 4 lakes (Orestiada, Mikri and Megali Prespa and Pamvotida).

Students and teachers thus had the opportunity to experience the power of the water element in the waterfalls of Edessa. Let’s take a tour of the “golden” world of the Macedonian kings in the tombs of Vergina. To stand in front of the Apostle Paul’s Altar in Veroia, to tour the mansions of the Jewish quarter of the City and to taste the infamous ravani of Veroia. Let’s get to know the magical cave of the dragon in Kastoria, but also the unique lakeside Neolithic settlement in Dispelio.

Learn about the life of the brown bear at the Brown Bear Information Center at Nikio School in Nymphaeum and see live bears at the “Arktouros” Brown Bear Sanctuary. Let’s visit the islet of Agios Achillios in Mikri Prespa and the settlement of Psarades in Megali Prespa and see the obvious signs of the great receding of the lake’s water level due to climate change.

Let’s tour the acropolis of the castle of Ioannina, visit the tomb of Ali Pasha, learn about the art of silversmiths at the Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina, take the characteristic boat to the islet in Lake Pamvotida and visit the house-museum of Ali Pasha. Let’s take a tour of the Natural History and Mushroom Museum of Meteora. Let’s tour Thessaloniki in the archaeological site of the palace of the Roman emperor Galerius, the “Kamara” and the Rotunda as well as the most famous landmark of the city, the White Tower.

This trip filled us with new images very different from those of Rhodes. We passed through mountains, forests and canyons, crossed lakes and rivers, visited rich wetlands and NATURA protected areas. We met other people, learned the history of their place and by extension the history of Greece, experienced their warm hospitality, tasted their traditional and delicious cuisine and admired the impressive architecture of mansions from other times. Thus, this trip, like every trip, changed us and made us richer in experiences, knowledge and precious memories.”
