“A difficult summer is coming,” says the deputy governor of Thessaloniki, Kostas Youtikas

With the current climate crisis, the readiness of Civil Protection and Firefighting in view of the official start of the fire season is more imperative than ever. The high temperatures even before the start of summer and the mild winter have put all the relevant bodies on red alert.

Shielding Sheikh Shu and accessibility of the forest on the occasion of the Flyover works are in the first priorities.

“Unfortunately, the climate models show that we will have a difficult summer. All winter there was little rainfall. A separate meeting will be held between the Traffic Police and the contractor of the Flyover project in order to coordinate so that the Fire Department knows what the routes to Sheikh Sou will be in case it is needed”, stressed the deputy governor of Thessaloniki, Kostas Yutikas.

The aircraft that will be set up at Macedonia Airport from May 1 are also expected.

On May 1st, the two fixed ten-meter high radars that have been installed and a portable one, connected to the Fire Department’s coordination center, will initially operate with generators.

The areas of responsibility of the volunteer groups starting vehicle patrols in Sheikh Shou on 1 May have already been declared to the Fire Service.

Forest of Oriokastro, forests of Sithonia, Kassandra, Mount Athos, Olympus, Pangaeo, Vermio, Voras are at the center of fire protection planning in Central Macedonia.
