The farmers of Agia demanded compensation for the floods with tractors on the streets

Large gathering with tractors in the central square of Agia, carried out today by the Agricultural Associations of the region, with a basic request for the payment of compensations for the damages caused by the floods of last September.

The representatives of the Agricultural Associations pointed out, among other things, that “almost 8 months have passed since the unprecedented disaster that hit our region and we are still waiting for the government to compensate us, as it did, and well, with the fellow farmers of Magnesia.

We are not demanding anything more, we want the same treatment. For eight months, our finances do not allow us to cultivate and the apple growers and chestnut growers in our area are in a dire financial situation, unable to cope and continue their crops due to debts.”

On the side of the farmers today was the municipality of Agia, which decided to operate its services with security personnel participating in the mobilization of the farmers. As the municipality states in its announcement “the farmers of the Municipality of Agia, having reached the limits of desperation, once again take to the streets claiming their just demands, which is the compensation of their products (apples, chestnuts), from the catastrophic flood “Daniel”, as was rightly done with the their colleagues in Magnesia. As an agricultural area par excellence, we consider that as a minimal sign of support and solidarity in their fair struggle, we owe it to the services of our Municipality headquarters to remain closed and to operate only with security personnel during the hours of the farmers’ mobilization, specifically from 11 a.m. until the end of the employees’ working hours. We ask the workers to attend the protest and support the fair demands of the farmers.

In addition, in the context of solidarity with the struggling farmers of our region and as an act of respect for the agricultural history of this place, as well as its people, during the awarding ceremony of the event with the name “6th KISSAVOS MARATHON RACE” EVANGELOS AD KOUMBAROS “”, which will take place on Sunday, April 28, 2024, the medals to the winners of the race will be awarded by representatives of the agricultural clubs and cooperatives and farmers of our region, and not by the Mayor, Deputy Mayors and municipal councilors, as was done in the previous competitions.

This decision is exclusively binding on the Municipal Authority. With this symbolic move, we want to make all citizens aware of the big problem facing apple growing in our region and send a message to the Government to immediately give the compensations if we really want to have more years with events that honor and support the apple of Agia”.

Among others, the deputy governor of the Primary Sector, Mr. D. Tsetsilas, addressed the rally of the farmers of Agia.
