Two financing contracts totaling 1,731,299.59 euros were signed today Friday 26/4 by the Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos.

The first contract, amounting to 962,499.59 euros, concerns the completion of the expropriation of a plot of land for the construction of the Unified Special Vocational High School – High School (EN.E.E.GY.L) of the Municipality of Heraklion, as well as the preparation
of the necessary studies and the issuance of the relevant building permit. It was a project that was in danger of being disaffiliated from the “Antonis Tritsis” program due to zero absorption and was put back on track for implementation after the prioritization of the new Municipal Authority and relevant contacts between Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos and the Deputy Minister of Interior Theodoros Livanios.

The second contract in the amount of 768,800 euros concerns the strengthening of the former Pedagogical Academy building, the supply and installation of instrumental monitoring measures for earthquakes, information actions on anti-seismic
protection, as well as the preparation of studies of existing school buildings.

In his statement, Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos said: “Today I signed two funding contracts from the “Antonis Tritsis” program which concern education in the Municipality of Heraklion. The first concerns the completion of the expropriation of the plot and the study for the Unified Special Vocational High School and High School which we will create in the area of Deilina on a plot of 7 acres. It was a funding that was in danger of being lost.

I believe that the actions taken by my partners and myself personally, were lightning quick to ensure that this project will move forward. You know these are quite complex issues when it comes to expropriations with studies to get to a project. I think we are now on safe ground. Such as
you understand, it is a big project which we have made an absolute priority and we are speeding it up given that the existing facilities are not satisfactory and in any case it is a very sensitive issue, that of special education to which we give high priority. Of course, we give priority to all issues of education in this city, which has so many children, so many students and which is really the community that donates blood to the Municipality as a whole.

And the second contract also concerns projects that are educational and mainly the project of the school building that we call the Academy and houses elementary schools, a special kindergarten and a special elementary school. This, as you know, is a project which is in progress and has faced several problems, but at the moment it has been launched so that the horizon of its completion can be seen, and in this case it is a supplementary funding that also comes from the Antonis Tritsis program.”

It is recalled that these are procedures that had been initiated by the previous Municipal Authority, with the contracts being signed, in the presence of the notary Nikis Gounari, at the D.O.Y. Heraklion with his representative
Deposits & Loans Fund (as is done with the specific program) Director of the D.O.Y. Sofia Blavaki.
