“In the period May – June 2023, emigrants’ emails were illegally trafficked” says the conclusion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

--

The conclusion of the Internal Audit Unit of the Ministry of the Interior regarding the leakage of personal data of Greeks abroad was delivered to the competent authorities.

The emigrants’ email leak to Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou, the ND MEP in the outgoing European Parliament, caused an uproar and cost her place on the European ballot. The case caused the removal of both the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the secretary of the ND Apodimons.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the extensive conclusion states that “the leakage of personal data of Greeks living abroad took place during the period of May-June 2023”. It should be noted that during this particular period the interim government had assumed duties due to the double national elections.

The Ministry of the Interior announced that the Ministry’s Internal Audit Unit carried out a full audit that resulted in an extensive conclusion, which Minister Niki Kerameos and Deputy Minister Theodoris Livanios delivered today to the head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office and the president of the Personal Data Protection Authority , to facilitate their investigations.

A central element of the conclusion is the verification, during the period of May-June 2023, of non-statutory traffic, within the Ministry of the Interior, of personal data of Greek citizens living abroad who had registered to vote in the parliamentary elections of 2023. The conclusion recommends disciplinary actions based on findings. Recommendations are also included to further strengthen security measures in relation to the protection of personal data.

On the basis of the Internal Audit’s conclusion, the minister and the deputy minister proceed with the procedures for the said disciplinary actions as well as for the further strengthening of the security measures in relation to the protection of personal data.

As emphasized by the Press Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “from the first moment, the political leadership of the ministry stated that the case of complaints about sending e-mails to Greek citizens living abroad will be fully clarified. Precisely for this reason, on the first working day after the citizens’ complaints, Ms. Kerameos and Mr. Livanios gave an order for an internal audit.”
