A seat for the Hellenism of the East will start operating at the Department of History-Archaeology of the AUTH, satisfying a standing request of the refugee associations…

The position with subject “History of Hellenism in the East, 19th-20th century” was allocated following the relevant decisions of the Ministry of Education, the Senate of AUTH and the meeting of the Department and the notice to fill it will be issued immediately.

In a statement issued by the Department of History and Archeology of the AUTH, it is pointed out that “this is a permanent request of the refugee world, through the satisfaction of which the Greek State honors in the best way the commemorations for the centenary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe and mandatory Exchange of Populations within the framework of the Treaty of Lausanne”.

The president of the Department of History of Archaeology, Professor Iakovos Michaelidis, expressed his thanks to the Greek State and especially to the Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis for the allocation of the specific position in the Department, stating to APE-MPE that “this is a symbolic move with a huge scientific footprint, since 100 years after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the Greek State honors refugee Hellenism as a whole and creates a seat at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the city that received the largest number of refugees”.

“In the coming years, through this position, aspects of the inexhaustible historical and cultural stock of Eastern Hellenism will be systematized and highlighted even more, while scientific networks will be created inside and outside the Greek territory, which will spread this knowledge both in the scientific community and and in society more broadly”, underlined Mr. Michailidis.
