The Local Civil Protection Coordinating Body of the Municipality met

The Local Civil Protection Coordinating Body of the Municipality of Komotini met this morning, with the aim of preparing for the 2024 fire fighting season. The coordinating body initially gave an account of last year’s fire fighting season where the fire in the area of ​​Gratini and the neighboring areas was dealt with promptly and successfully Municipalities.

The Municipality of Komotini in all fires, where it was requested, provided assistance with water tankers, machines as well as fire extinguishers used by the voluntary organizations of the area. In addition, the Social Services of the Municipality of Komotini, in collaboration with the volunteers and all the agencies involved, responded immediately during the organized evacuation of citizens that took place from the settlement of Gratini and from settlements of neighboring municipalities. For the residents who were evacuated, the Municipality of Komotini secured temporary accommodation and care, in the specially designed area of ​​the Komotini Multifunctional Center.

At today’s meeting, issues of prevention and coordination of the involved bodies during the fire season were also discussed:

a) Preparation of Komotini Municipality staff vehicles to provide assistance to the Fire Service in the event of a fire

b) maintenance of municipal and mainly forest road network with machinery and personnel of the Municipality

c) cleaning of garbage in public areas near forests and settlements, with machinery and personnel of the Municipality, cleaning of brushwood in settlements and in the forest of Nymphaea from fuel

d) informing the presidents of the Communities as well as the citizens about the observance of the measures during the fire season

e) cleaning of plots of private individuals who do not clean the combustible material in accordance with the current legislation

f) provision of equipment and firefighting vehicles to the voluntary Red Cross and Greek Rescue Team teams.

g) application of the Fire Protection Regulation in settlements and buildings of the Municipality of Komotini located within forest areas.

Mayor Yiannis Garanis found out “the excellent cooperation between the involved bodies as well as the readiness of the Civil Protection mechanism of the Municipality of Komotini”, which, as claimed “it was proven in last year’s fire in the area of ​​Gratini”. He also pointed out the timely start of the Municipality’s preparations for the fire season.
