Specifically, according to the statement, “the complexity of the deceased’s health problems required the collaboration of a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a nephrologist, an infectious disease specialist and an intensivist.
The scientific opinion of all the above was that the possible intubation of the patient, without an absolute indication, would constitute medical malpracticeas its extubation would be practically impossible”.
In the same statement, it is also added that “the admission to the ICU of a non-intubated patient, who did not meet the medical conditions and at the same time was a relative of a Member of Parliament, would constitute impermissible discrimination“.
What the Vascular Surgery professor’s lawyers said
The lawyers issued the following statement, which reads: “Our client I.K., Professor of Vascular Surgery, expresses his sincere regret for the death of Dimitrios Kallianos. All the doctors tried to deal with the multiple health problems that he had deceased, as their medical duty dictates and as they operate for all patients without exception.
The complexity of the deceased’s health problems required the collaboration of a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a nephrologist, an infectious disease specialist and an intensivist. The scientific opinion of all of the above was that any intubation of the patient, without an absolute indication, would constitute an incorrect medical procedure, as extubation would be practically impossible.
The admission of patients to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) governed by strict medical rules, that apply to all people, and the relevant decision is made by all treating physicians. Admission to M.E.Th. of a non-intubated patient, who did not meet the medical conditions and at the same time was a relative of a Member of Parliament, would constitute impermissible discriminatory treatment. During April 23, the patient worsened and it was decided to admit him to the ICU. at 18.30, after his intubation preceded it. Unfortunately, his very burdened health did not allow him to avoid the fatal accident”.
The above announcement of the professor comes just a few hours after the declaration of the MP of New Democracy, that it is expected to take legal action for the death of his father.
What the Professional Union of Vascular Surgeons of Greece reports
The Professional Union of Vascular Surgeons of Greece (EEAE) also gave a response to the accusations of Yannis Kallianos for the death of his father.
As he states, the characterizations heard against them in public are unacceptable and he emphasizes that “the investigation of any medical negligence is exclusively the task of the independent judiciary”.

The members of the Board of the Professional Association of Vascular Surgeons of Greece (EAAE) express our sincere condolences to the family of the late Dimitrios Kallianos. However, we also express our deep sadness and disappointment for the unacceptable verbal attack suffered by one of our most prominent members from the deceased’s family environment, through social media and mass media.
The inalienable right to express grief and mental pain for the ill health and loss of life of a person by his relatives does not justify indecent, insulting, threatening and immoral behavior towards those who are fighting to the best of their ability to perform of the best outcome to their patients.
We underline that in our country, the investigation of any medical negligence is exclusively the work of the independent judiciary and any public naming of colleagues by any other organization or famous person or public official falls self-evidently into the spectrum of defamation. The decision on which “competents will go to jail” is not made by politicians, parliamentarians or bystanders in the television windows, but is the exclusive prerogative of the independent Greek Judiciary.
The specialty of Vascular Surgery deals with patients with multiple and serious health problems and Vascular Surgeons fight with all their strength to exhaust every possibility of helping their patients. Characterizations carried in the press such as “ignorant”, “deceitful”, “stupid”, “people of lower forms of life”, “human beings”, “having no trace of empathy” are unacceptable, especially when they come from the lips of famous people and we think they can divert the situation into dangerous directions, jeopardizing the safety of health workers as well as patients.
As EEAE we are at the side of every patient who needs us but always with respect and appreciation for the work of our colleagues who fight for the good of their patients and we will always support this with all our strength.
