A European ‘rapid reaction force’ could be created as early as 2025, says French defense minister

A European “rapid reaction force”, which the French president referred to yesterday, Thursday Emmanuel Macron and which will be reserved for operations such as the removal of nationals from countries in crisis, could be created as early as next year, the French defense minister said today.

“This is an important issue and one on which I hope we can have an effect as early as next year if we respond in a big way and very quickly.”stated Sebastian Lecorny in an interview he gave to the French television network France 2.

The French minister justified this program, saying that there are “many crises which do not fall under the competence of NATO and in which France often conducts operations alone”. He cited the example of last year’s removal of nationals from the Sudan.

“We conducted an operation in Khartoum, we evacuated 1,080 (people of various) nationalities, 1,000 people, 200 French or (…) 250 if I remember correctly, in which we created a large airlift with A400M, with ships. It turned out that France (…) was practically alone”explained.

It is natural that this burden, which has “cost, value”, should be shared, he added.

“There are missions that are militarized, for which however the NATO he doesn’t need to know for many reasons, and for which we say today ‘let’s do it in Europe’, and this is pragmatism for us”he added.
