A torch relay and a road race are organized by the Municipalities of Haidari and Kaisariani and the Labor Centers of Athens and Piraeus on Sunday, April 28, in memory of the 200 executed communists on May Day 1944 in Kaisariani, which marks 80 years this year. These initiatives are included in the two days of relevant events of the 2 Municipalities.
Specifically, the torch relay will start at 07:30 and it is organized by the Municipalities of Chaidari and Kaisariani and the “Labor – People’s Street Fight” at 08:00, and is organized by the Labor Centers of Athens and Piraeus with the support of SEGAS. In both cases, the starting point will be the same: Block 15 at the Haidari Camp (KARAISKAKI I’). They will end up at the Shooting Range of Kaisariani, following the exact same route taken by the trucks of the German invaders when they transported the 200 dead to Kaisariani on the morning of May 1, 1944.
The streets through which the torch relay and road race will pass
The total route is 14.2 km. The runners, starting from the Haidari Camp “Block 15”, will follow the route: Flutzi Street – Agonist Camp Haidari – Chios – Str. Karaiskaki – Iera Odos – Piraeus – Ermou – Asomaton – Vasilissis Sofias Avenue – Vasilissis Olgas Avenue – Vasileos Kon/nou Avenue – Vassileos Alexandrou – Eufronio – Ymittos – Panionio – Iroon Skopetiriou Avenue. – Altar of Liberty.
After 2.5 hours the end of the race is declared.

In its announcement about the street race, the Piraeus Labor Center notes:
“On May 1, 2024, it will be 80 years since the execution of the 200 resistance fighters at the Kaisariani shooting range by the German Nazi conquerors. The execution of the 200 communists, most of whom were members of the trade union movement, illuminate the path of struggle that our class must take, against exploitation and wars.
Honoring their sacrifice, the Labor Centers of Athens and Piraeus, with the support of SEGAS, are organizing a road race of memory, honor and continuation of the struggle, called “For the 200 executed in Kaisariani” for the rights of the working class. The route from the Haidari Camp – BLOCK 15 to the Kaisariani Shooting Range is 14 kilometers long and follows the usual route chosen by German trucks to transport the dying fighters who were kept during the occupation in the concentration camp in Haidari and executed in the Shooting Range of Caesariani.
On the route from Haidari to Kaisariani, the dying leave notes on the road for their own people, their loved ones, their mother, their brothers, their partners, their competitors. Passers-by played the postman. They took them and took them where they needed to go.
We will convey their message again today 80 years later, keeping alive the sacrifice of the participants in this road race in the footsteps of history.”
