“Damn you liar” was the first reaction of those present in the room where, after three years, the trial for the wrongful death of Jason Lalaounisafter the end of the testimony of the police passenger who was riding in the vehicle, which made an illegal turn at the entrance to the Parliament and killed him.

During the examination of the witness, there were not a few comments from the audience, indicating the indignation of the relatives and friends who have flooded the courtroom, with what the witness testified. witnesswho neither more nor less testified that it was not the vehicle that was to blame for the traffic accident that took the life of a young child, but the high speed that the machine driven by Jason had developed.

In fact, according to his words, if he was going at a lower speed, he might not have hit so badly. Of course, as evidenced by the events themselves as well as the autopsy report, there is no marking at the scene, only markings on the road for a mandatory straight path.

As testified by eyewitness and driver of the vehicle that was behind the taxi, it was forced to stop, testimony that contradicts the so-called driver and passenger. “The taxi made a slight movement to the left showing that it was forced to stop and that it did not give priority” while when asked about the speed of the machine he said that “it was not more than 50 km, if it was more the child would have been disintegrated”.

The District Prosecutor addressing the witness said:

“You think you had the right to turn left” with the witness answering how “yeah, that’s what we thought because there was no sign.”

The prosecutor answered, among other things, that “one is allowed by the code and another allows the traffic warden to maneuver at the request of the code” while it was mentioned that at the point there was a marking for a mandatory straight path.

In a subsequent question, the prosecutor asked: “the taxi gave you priority, shouldn’t you have also checked progressively”?

“We gradually checkedreplied the witness, with the prosecutor insisting that “but if you were going steadily the motorcyclist would have seen you.”

The police are going to blame Jason

In the testimony of police passenger in the vehicle he said the following:

“We flashed left, we were in the left lane, we passed some vehicles. The taxi gave us priority and turned on its lights. He gestured to us with his hand and then we passed.”

He then stated that “There is always a traffic warden at the entrance and he comes out when needed” essentially admitting his decorative role, after admitting that when a vehicle wants to turn left and enter Parliament, as usual there is no way of communication.

The policeman admits that everyone was entering illegally

“Throughout the years they’ve always entered this way. The traffic warden is there and intervenes whenever necessary. He did not make an adjustment that day. Christos and I checked, the rear vehicles had slowed down, we were going at 5 km.

When we approached and the 2 wheels came up on the pavement we were jolted by a strong crash. I hit my head, we didn’t understand what hit us, at first I looked forward then back and saw the machine that had crashed in the back.

I went up to him, basically we went together (s.s means the driver). A gentleman came with his motorbike, declared himself a rescuer and we made room so that not many people would gather on top of Iason. I called 166. Then they told us to move the vehicle and put it further forward and then I also called my service. We sat on the edge until the ambulance came. Then the traffic police came..” testified, among other things.

In Question of the chairperson “didn’t you notice the movement of the machine?”, o witness he answered “not at all. The machine was not visible from where we were nor could we foresee such a thing. The machine was far behind when we started to enter the Parliament, it was 70m. below”.

Continuing her deposit told him: “I couldn’t imagine how a traffic accident could happen there. In the following days I saw the video, we saw that the driver overtook from the right, but that was not the wrong move. He has seen us… and he doesn’t stop, he doesn’t cut speed, the machine just makes a mistake in the line it has taken. He thought that the vehicle would leave smoothly towards the entrance of the Parliament. But he found the vehicle on the pavement of Parliament and so hit the back. THEhe wanted to pass behind us.”

“Why couldn’t he pass” asked him chairman.

“Made a wrong line calculation” answered the witness.

In a subsequent question the witness was asked to answer whether “You sensed a strong impact. As a police officer you can calculate the speed of the machine” with the passenger replying that:

“If it was going with less mileage it just might not have hit as hard, but it definitely would have hit us.” admitting in essence that Iason’s fate was predetermined as it turns out that the official vehicle, which did not carry markings that are recognized as such, violently interrupted his course.

In another question from the court, in which it was pointed out to the witness that if there is no other marking, the marking means a mandatory course, the congressman characteristically stated “does the fact that you are in the habit of doing it on request make it legal?’ while continuing he states the following simple “if I was driving and the traffic police came I would have big penalties, if I had turned there, I would have a license today, what do you think?”.

The witness proceeding with his testimony and answering a question from the defense counsel: “Do you think you could turn?”

“I would avoid it” the witness answers with the lawyer explaining that his question refers to a period before the accident with the passenger of the vehicle that killed the unfortunate Jason admitting that before the accident he had been in it several times.

The defense attorney even found a discrepancy with the witness’s first statement made just 10 days after the accident about how the taxi vehicle signaled the driver of the squad car to pass, because in his original statement he had said that the taxi simply stopped. The witness replied: “I had to state everything … I haven’t written all the details in my statement.”
