In an announcement by the Coordinating Committee of the Larisa branch of PESEK, they state:

“For three years now, the government of N.D. attempts, despite the strong resistance of the teachers, to impose the evaluation in the public school. The evaluation, contrary to what the media and the government put forward, is in no way aimed at improving the school.

Its central goal is the categorization of schools, the complete commercialization of public education and the submission of teachers to these policies, under the fear of neo-inspectorism. In two words: they want to dismantle and turn public schools into small businesses, just as they dismantle public hospitals and commercialize public universities.

As much as staff evaluation made hospitals better, so will schools.

Against the educational movement that is fighting a long-term struggle to defend the right of all children to education, the government, after dragging the Federations (OLME-IOE) and their unions 14 times in trials to make the strike-abstention illegal, today attempts to terminate and replace managers and supervisors with the junta-inspired circular-order issued on 3/4/24. With this, he demands to replace all the Headmasters and all the headmistresses, as well as the Heads of school units who, defending the Public school and their students, participate in a declared strike-abstention from their “evaluation” procedures!

In other words, it hits even the constitutionally guaranteed right to strike!

We, the retired teachers, (who experienced the intimidation and arbitrariness of the inspector-evaluator) express our solidarity in the struggle of our fellow teachers. The defense of the public – and free – character of the school is the business of all workers, of all the people.

We know that the rulers are disturbed that a poor child can, despite all the obstacles that are raised for him, study. This bothers them deeply. They want to bend teachers to pass their policy. Which is a school defined by market logic, commercialization, standardization and conformity. A school that will focus on memorization and “high-stakes” exams. A school where young people will be treated as customers, rather than active citizen entities. And with teachers subordinated, with the fear of the “evaluator-inspector” and without any possibility to interfere in the curriculum, in their work. A school where the Teacher is demoted to an application technician or a security officer! Or both! This is the real goal of their assessment.

Therefore, the teachers’ struggle must be won

We stand with the struggling education movement.

We extend a shield of protection to our struggling teachers. The right to strike is intertwined with the Republic and constitutes proof of its existence, therefore we have an obligation to defend it”.
