Kella’s speech for ODYTH: “Holistic plan of the Government for the major issue of climate change”

“The climate crisis is unfortunately “here” and shows us in the most emphatic way its multi-layered consequences. With extreme weather phenomena, with destruction of animal and plant capital, with loss of property and the efforts of an entire life. We in Larissa and Thessaly, unfortunately, are still “counting” the wounds of “Daniel”, with many villages, agricultural lands, residences and businesses remaining flooded to this day, with very serious economic consequences for the flood victims and the local community. .

The above was emphasized, among others, by the President of the Educational Affairs Committee of the Parliament, Mr. Christos Kellas in his speech on the Bill of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, to deal with the effects of climate change in the areas of water management, forest management and protection, etc., in the Plenary Session of the Parliament and added:

“The Government of New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, personally, stood by the victims from the first moment and pledged to proceed with a holistic approach to the major problem of climate change. Part of this overall plan is the present comprehensive bill, which includes important reforms. On the one hand, for the rational management of water and for the management of the forest ecosystems of the Country. On the other hand, to deal with arbitrary construction in the built environment, as well as all issues related to energy security”.

Then Mr. Kellas noted: “The water department of Thessaly is the first, in which unified and targeted measures will be taken, through the establishment of the “Thessaly Water Management Organization S.A.” – (ODYTH S.A.). The establishment of the Organization, which operates thanks to the public interest and is under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment, is part of the effort to reconstruct Thessaly, which is a personal bet of the Prime Minister, as he himself has emphasized, which is proven, moreover, in practice . ODYTH, among other things, undertakes: the preparation and monitoring of the implementation of river basin management plans, flood risk management plans, the preparation of master plans for the projects required for flood protection, planning, construction and maintenance anti-flood projects, but also the maintenance and administration of the land improvement projects of the irrigation network. The share capital of ODYTH is entirely covered by the Greek government, while its Board of Directors is constituted by a joint decision of the Ministers of Environment and Energy, Infrastructure and Transport and Rural Development, as regards the bodies of the Administration”.

The politician from Larissa also pointed out the following: “I would like to thank the Minister, Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis, who, after my intervention in the competent Committee, where I pointed out the injustices against the employees of the OEB, in terms of the recognition of previous service, their salary situation, but also the treatment them, in the event of the abolition of the ODYTH, recognized the fair request of the workers and filed a relevant legislative regulation in this bill, which removes the existing injustices. Another proof that the Government has both open ears and quick reflexes”.

Concluding his speech, Mr. Kellas emphasized: “The climate crisis concerns us all. And its treatment must be holistic, immediate and crucial. This bill has an undeniably positive environmental footprint. And it puts our environmental and energy policy on solid foundations. That’s why I invite you to vote for it”.
