Beekeepers “migrate” to Peloponnese and northern Greece

--

Beekeepers in Lassithi, Crete are experiencing one of the worst years in recent years. The lack of rains and the general drought have led to a dramatic decrease in production.

This year’s lack of rain and the reduced flowering that this implies has created serious problems in the production of all of Crete and has put the professionals, who are trying to maintain their beehives, in a difficult position.

In fact, according to the president of the Lasithi Beekeeping Association Costas Krassas, the problem concerns the beekeepers of all Crete.

As he characteristically said speaking today (25/4) on Radio Lasithi, a large part of the beekeepers of the whole island bring their bees to the mountains of Lasithi, centered on Selakano.

They transport the beehives to the Peloponnese and northern Greece

According to Costas Krassas, some have been forced to leave Crete and move their beehives to areas of the Peloponnese and northern Greece in order to continue their production.

So they end up traveling 1-2 times a month to take care of the bees and of course stay for at least two months in the spring in these areas for the harvest season.

Given that no one can predict how the climate will develop in the coming years, the president of the Lasithi Beekeeping Association emphasized that there is a need for support measures from the state to continue producing Greek honey since the risk of the withdrawal of professionals is very visible .
