“The Rio-Antirrio Bridge is an emblematic project that is now a point of reference in modern Greece. Of Greece that can reach higher, develop and strengthen in many ways”. This was stated by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, during the event held, today, for the 20 years of operation of the project and on the occasion of the passing of the Olympic Flame, on its journey to the Olympic Games in Paris.
As Mr. Staikouras emphasized, among other things, in his greeting: “The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with hard work, planning and method, continues to fulfill its strategic role, implementing emblematic, large and small projects throughout the territory. Projects that improve the everyday life of the citizen and enhance the well-being of the citizens”.
For her part, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport Christina Alexopoulou, during her speech pointed out that “the Bridge made life easier for the residents of the area, contributed to the development of the economy and today, it sets an example, contributing to the reduction of the environmental footprint, in many ways.
I want to focus on reducing the price of electric vehicles by 34%, placing charging points on the bridge, and also on the use of electric vehicles for staff transportation. All this makes up the image” underlined Mrs. Alexopoulou “of a modern organization that takes the energy footprint seriously”.
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Infrastructure, Nikos Tachiaos, in his greeting stated that: “The Bridge is a symbol of the modernization of Greece at the turn of the twentieth century. A request which remains permanent and is continued today by the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. It is a project that has unique manufacturing characteristics, a know-how original for its time. French and Greek engineers collaborated in the construction of the bridge, transferring their know-how to our country. Something very important for Greek construction companies.
This osmosis between the country’s construction companies and groups like Vinci continues to be a challenge for the coming years as it generates added value.
In the future we can develop – because this is the demand of the time – new projects using the models of concessions and PPPs, which are of an efficiency nature and were successfully tested on the bridge”.
