The Pan-European Immunization Week is celebrated by the WHO and the Medical world of our country in the last week of April, a week dedicated to a measure of Public Health, which has prevented millions of deaths around the world and improved the quality of life of people to a significant extent in the last century.

The Medical Association of Larissa and the Union of Freelance Pediatricians of Larissa point out once again that every 60 seconds 5 human lives are saved worldwide by vaccinations. Pan-European Immunization Week aims to increase public awareness and awareness of the importance of vaccination for Public Health and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the implementation of the EPI (Expanded Program on Immunization) – a vaccination program established in 1974 for to ensure that all children in all countries benefit from life-saving vaccines. This program evolved into what is now known as the Essential Immunization Program to cover infants, children, adolescents and adults. There are now 13 vaccines recommended by the WHO for this program: BCG (tuberculosis), DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), haemophilus B, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, measles-rubella-mumps, pneumococcal, rotavirus, HPV (virus human papillomas), Covid-19 (for adults).

Today every country in the world has a national vaccination program that is judged to be one of the safest, least expensive and highly effective and successful fiscal interventions. But it is really discouraging to see that, despite the fact that the safety and effectiveness of vaccines have been documented for decades. There are countries in Europe, but also in the rest of the continents, where epidemics of diseases that can be prevented through vaccinations break out. Vaccine hesitancy is now among the 10 biggest threats to global health according to the WHO. In addition, due to the pandemic and the restrictive measures it imposed, millions of vaccine doses were lost and pediatric vaccination went back at least 10 years according to the UN and UNICEF.

Forgotten diseases, such as whooping cough, measles and meningitis, have returned according to recent announcements by the EODY and the Ministry of Health, which point to the rise of these diseases in our country in recent months, diseases that can certainly be prevented by vaccination!

The success and maintenance of high vaccination coverage, epidemiological surveillance as well as immediate and targeted measures are key to addressing these epidemics. Vaccines have protected many generations so far, and the medical community must ensure that this continues to be the case for years to come!
