Municipality of Heraklion: Unpaid debts for irrigation water under the microscope

However, the limitation of available water reserves, according to the responsible deputy mayor Manolis Haireti, make the rational use of water resources by all citizens and the strict observance of the irrigation regulation imperative.

In fact, as he explains, the Municipality has the name in hand but he does not have the VAT number of the consumer that is necessary to know in order to have a clear picture in relation to the identity of the user and what will be sent the water charge.

The result of this situation is that there are too many consumers who do not receive water bills and one prevails chaos in relation to irrigation water charges.

At the same time, as he emphasizes, there will also be a stricter framework regarding the operation of water bodies, which should have a more interventionist role that will prevent tolerance of illegal connections and in the loss of large quantities of water that are not priced. He emphasizes that in addition to the economic dimension of the case, there is also an environmental one, since we are living in a difficult situation where water resources have been minimized and we must ensure their rational management.

A large capital village of the Municipality of Heraklion pays only the fixed costs for irrigation water, according to the Deputy Mayor of Finance Giorgos Agrimanakis, who notes that the same is happening with many other consumers.

This situation creates a serious discrepancy in the profitability of irrigation, which burdens the Municipality of Heraklion.

In fact, according to the deputy mayor, this problem is compounded by the fact that there is a significant number of consumers who have not been identified with the their hydrometer, resulting in no clear picture of who the user is and where the account should go.

The result of this situation is that they exist too many consumers who do not receive water bills and chaos prevails in relation to irrigation water charges.

According to Mr. Agrimanakis who is responsible for the critical sector of irrigation in the Municipality of Heraklion, modern technological solutions are being sought for all these problems.

A possible solution considered at this stage concerns the use of hydrometers which will be activated with prepaid cards, in an attempt to restore the acute problem that exists in relation to the impossibility of recording the actual water consumption.
