Amnesty International’s annual report highlights the illegal use of violence in Greece

--

Every year, the international Amnesty records the human rights situation around the world, making recommendations to governments and global bodies. In 2023/24, 155 countries were recorded.

This record focuses on four themes that highlight at a global level some of the many trends described in the report:

  • the treatment of civilians as expendable in armed conflict;
  • the growing backsliding on gender justice;
  • the disproportionate impact of economic crises, climate change and environmental degradation on the most marginalized communities;
  • the threats of new and existing technologies, including productive artificial intelligence.

These points represent, from Amnesty International’s perspective, critical challenges for human rights around the world in 2024 and beyond.

What is happening in Greece?

In Greece, reports of illegal use of force in policing protests continued.

  • survivors of the Pylos shipwreck, where more than 600 people lost their lives, blamed the Greek authorities for causing the incident;
  • human rights defenders continued to face criminalization for their work with refugees, asylum seekers and migrant women;
  • an investigation by the Greek Data Protection Authority identified 88 people as targets of the Predator spyware;
  • violations of the rights of conscientious objectors continued;
  • the devastating fires have resulted in the loss of human lives and natural habitats, amid concerns about the failure of the forest fire-fighting system.
