The purpose of the consultation was to inform the local community and the professionals of the onshore port area about the projects proposed by the studies

Yesterday, Wednesday, April 24, a public consultation on the “redevelopment and anti-corrosion protection study of the inland port area of Hersonissos” was held in the meeting room of the Lim municipal office, with a large participation. Hersonissos, following the invitation of the Mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis and the president of the Municipal Port Fund of Hersonissos, Katerina Thrapsaniotis.

The purpose of the consultation was to inform the local community and the professionals of the onshore port area about the projects proposed by the studies, but also to record opinions, comments, observations and suggestions, in order to take them into account during the stage of drawing up the final studies after they have been evaluated which are expected to be completed by May 31, 2024. In the present phase, all the preliminary studies and the specific projects proposed were presented.

The consultation was attended by businessmen operating in the Lim foreshore area. Hersonissos, port users (owners of commercial ships and private pleasure boats), professional fishermen, representatives of the Hersonisos Chamber of Commerce and hoteliers. Also present were the Deputy Mayors, the members of the Board of Directors. of the Port Fund and the commanders of the A.T. Hersonissos, the 2nd Port Department of Hersonisos and the Fire Department of Hersonisos.

The whole of the studies concern the regeneration of the land area of the coastal front of the Port of Hersonissos and in particular the area that has been designated as the land area of the port by acts of the Administration, but also the modernization of the port facilities (pier, wharves, etc.) of the Lim. Peninsula. The basic choice of the study is the creation of three zones within the terrestrial zone. The zone for the development of table seats from the adjacent businesses, the zone for shared use (walking, passage of emergency vehicles and catering vehicles) and, finally, the third zone for the placement of urban equipment and viewing.

As shown by the positions of the researchers, the basic aim of the study is the “liberation” of the beach front, ensuring a comfortable pedestrian circulation along the entire length with an unobstructed view of the sea and, at the same time, the functional restoration of the shops, by moving the seating development areas from the front to the side of the buildings, as well as highlighting the archaeological structures

In addition, the construction of a breakwater reef is planned to protect the port from siltation, while an important intervention of the study is the construction of a pier on piles. The mentioned wooden jetty will allow the docking of several boats, at the same time constituting a new walking route for pedestrians, who will now be able to approach the Roman pier.

As characteristically stated by the Mayor of Hersonissos, Zacharias Doxastakis: “The objectives of the regeneration study are to create an aesthetically improved environment with a greater variety of uses and activities, the aesthetic restoration and the elimination of risks due to the static nature of the existing structures in the port area, the improvement of the connection of the sea with the fabric of the city, the increase of berthing positions and the improvement of the services provided by the port facilities to the standards of a modern approach”.

The Regeneration Study has been included in the financial program Philodimos II (invitation VII) according to the no. prot. 63892/2-10-2020 decision of the Service Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior on the subject: “Inclusion of the Act of the Municipal Port Fund of Hersonisos in the “FILODIMOS II” Program, while the project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
